In the case of Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Maya and 9 Others, ten women appeared before the Federal High Court in Kebbi State facing drug-related charges. At the time of their arraignment, none of them had legal representation and were at risk of navigating the criminal justice process without the support needed to understand the charges against them or properly defend themselves.
Following a request for assistance, the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative (Partners West Africa Nigeria – PWAN) intervened to provide legal representation for the women. Beyond appearing in court on their behalf, PWAN also extended humanitarian support during their detention by providing feeding assistance to ease the difficult conditions they faced while awaiting further proceedings.
As part of the legal intervention, PWAN filed an application for bail on their behalf. The court granted the application, and PWAN subsequently perfected the bail conditions, which led to their release from detention.
The case highlights a fundamental principle of justice: every accused person deserves fair legal representation, as the law presumes individual’s innocent until proven guilty. With legal support now in place and their liberty secured on bail, the women are able to follow their trial with a clearer understanding of the process while PWAN continues to represent them as the case progresses.
