ABOUT THE PROJECT
NED: BEYOND VOTING: INCREASING WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS (PHASE 5)
Phase V: Towards the 2023 Elections (2022–2023)
The fifth phase addressed election specific barriers, focusing on protection, accountability, and grassroots mobilization.
Key Activities
Grassroots Mobilization: PWAN established citizens’ support centers in Gombe and Kano (supporting around 1,000 people per location) and trained community volunteers on voter registration and awareness.
Security & Protection of Women: We conducted security threat assessments on election related violence against women. We developed training manuals and IEC materials in English, Hausa, Yoruba, and braille and trained security agencies (police, NSCDC, army, immigration, correctional services).
Judicial Accountability: We deployed 18 citizen observers across 9 election petition tribunals in FCT and Kano and organized public workshops to share tribunal observation findings.
Media & Advocacy: We produced and aired radio jingles and programs across three states for voter education.
Impact
- Enhanced women’s protection and visibility during the 2023 elections.
- Strengthened collaboration between CSOs, INEC, judiciary, and security agencies.
- Contributed to implementation of Electoral Act 2022, promoting credibility and inclusivity.
Through these five phases, the Beyond Voting project has grown into a movement that not only prepares women for political participation but also reshapes Nigeria’s governance structures to become more inclusive and representative.
