From Law to Practice: Advancing Criminal Justice Reform in Nigeria

From Law to Practice: Advancing Criminal Justice Reform in Nigeria is a new publication by the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative (Partners West Africa–Nigeria) on moving criminal justice reform from progressive laws to practical change for citizens. Drawing on PWAN’s work across Nigeria, it highlights evidence and lessons on implementing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act/Laws, expanding access to justice, reducing pre-trial detention, strengthening legal aid and the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme, updating criminal and penal codes, building institutional capacity, and improving accountability across the justice system. The publication argues that Nigeria’s next phase of reform must institutionalise what works, close the gap between law and implementation, and build a justice system that is efficient, accountable, inclusive and responsive to citizens.
